What is the best split between VOO and SCHD for a 20 year old investor?
Short Answer- VOO now, SCHD later
As of now I’d be doing 100% VOO 0% SCHD. VOO has much higher growth potential which is important for a young investor like you, because your goal should be to get your portfolio as valuable as possible as soon as possible for greater compound interest. Then when you’re nearing retirement and your portfolio is worth a couple million dollars, then you transition into SCHD to provide steady income for you to live off of in retirement. There is just no upside to dividend funds if you aren’t planning on living off of your investment portfolio in the near future. Go for growth now and maybe when you’re 5-10 years before retirement start cutting your growth funds and move them into dividend funds and fixed income funds. Hope that helps
