Yes this is happening. Our tipping pool was increased from 4% to 6% just recently with that extra 2% going directly to back of house employees like cooks. Regardless of the tip we get we have to pay it.
100% legal in California sadly.
Why sadly? Doesn’t the cook slaving over the hot grill also deserve extra money? Man I don’t miss the days of working in a kitchen in the dead of summer
@@Slowly_succeeding the server is making $2.13/hour. The cook is making at least $10.
Socialism is great is t it?
@@BJJMTF the funny thing is when that increases happened the “socialist supporters” at the restaurant were the biggest resisters, trying to “rally the troops” against it. True hypocrisy at its finest
@@DBSWAGGINSNot true. The comment is regarding a server in CA. In CA, all servers get paid minimum wage at a minimum, that $16.50 in all of CA and up to $19.18 in certain cities, so, no, the server is not getting $2/hr plus tips.
Tipping needs to go away. Pay people a wage.
So strongly disagree, paid my way through college on tips. Never could have made what I made on a wage at a restaurant. Most servers would quit too.
Funny thing is, every server complains yet will disagree with this proposition. They make more with tips than they would with a standard wage for their skill set 😂
@@Cnotts So what your saying is tips overpay servers. checks out. Thats why tips need to go away because when food prices at restaurants keep going up I inherently have to tip you more for the same service. Pouring me a glass of beer that costs $12 vs a soda takes no difference in skill yet you expect me to give you 10x more of a tip?
@NChambernator what do you think would happen to food prices and quality of service if servers were paid hourly without tips. Restaurants often only make money during the lunch/dinner lunch. Less staff worse service, local restaurants would go out of business. Good servers make good money and would leave immediately with a hourly wage.
The good news for you is there’s a very simple solution! Don’t go out to eat!
@@Cnotts if that all were to be true, how do other western countries with no tipping culture do it?
What a disgusting business practice
Something something bootstraps dude. This is the great america
The problem is that I know a lot of people are making good money at nicer restaurants and bars, banning it doesn’t always mean everyone will suddenly be happy lmao
@@mrbenizzle4087Yea but they also get paid more anyway. I think if they translated the tips into higher wages across the board no one would care
Why are we paying restaurants employees. The owners need to pay them
you are paying the restaurant, therefore, you are paying the employees.
The problem now is that even if owners pay their employees we are still expected to tip 😂😂😂
Dude u know even when the owner is paying them the consumer is still paying… money doesn’t just magically come from the owner without coming from the patron first
If the owners paid them premium wages the price of food would double
At least for family owned businesses
Id completely agree. I mean i think tipping should be seen as a lot more offensive than it is in the USA. And I pretty much don’t go out to restaurants because of this…. but that said… knowing this… it makes me want to dine out even less than I do.
The rare times i do dine out.. Im now asking the server about this every time. And if they do this. I’m walking out. And where possible making it obviously known. I dont care how annoying i might be.
I object to tipping. But transferring your tip to the other workers like this is inexcusable.
Servers’ pay without tips = unfair.
Teachers’ pay = unfair.
Students don’t tip their teachers though. It shouldn’t be on the consumer to make sure servers are being paid fairly. The restaurant industry needs to be held accountable and overhauled.
Profit margins for the restaurant industry is incredibly small, allowing $3 an hour salary with tips keeps food costs affordable, even though takeout nowadays is already so expensive
Scrap tips, increase wages.
Tips are called “tips” you give it if you feel like it and it shouldn’t be an obligation
We all know what will happen. Even if wages increase, we would still be pressured to tip.
Its the same with delivery drivers. If they dont get tipped, they pay cash out of pocket for gas and car expenses
well yeah but they’re also working for themselves it’s just a business expense
@nitinravikumar7739 and half of em probably don’t claim tips on taxes. I know servers that make more than guys in union
LOL that’s not how that works. They’re not getting paid $7/hr living off tips.
Depends on what kind of delivery driver… I work for dominos, uber, and Uber eats (other jobs too of course). Dominos and most other pizza companies will pay you either per mile, or per delivery you take on top of your hourly. Uber doesn’t directly pay for mileage, but their pay is decent enough so that even if you don’t get tipped, you’ll still be in the green. Uber eats or doordash, if the customer didn’t tip, you’re basically working for free (in most cases)
I was in Europe and places like Portugal had basically zero tipping. It was fantastic. Destroy tips and give US workers healthcare
Please, explain how to destroy tips. Common sense tells us that even if we increase wages, we are still pressured to tip.
@@Deerjason do you tip your mechanic, your lawyer, your dentist? Businesses just change the norm and pay the employees fairly. Tips mostly exist in service industries fundamentally because we all know its a crap job that pays poorly. Other parts of the world do not tip.
@@itscoleonyoutube other parts of the world do not tip because they don’t have a tipping culture. USA always tries to be different and tipping is no different. It’s so out of hand right now that it won’t be stopped, even if everyone got a livable wage. Before, you had to click a button to tip and now you have to click a button to not tip. This action pressures people into tipping.
@@Deerjasonsure I know that
@@Deerjasonthat the problem with me lol the more you pressure me the less likely I tip I might even do a dine and dash if it gets that bad 😂😂
Pay your employees. Tipping should be up to the customer.
Get a different job. People need to stop entertaining this tipping culture practice, only then will we see meaningful change.
What needs to stop is tipping for self service kiosks and pick up option, which is literally everywhere.
Where have you seen a kiosk ask for a tip?
Is true even at some places where they have coffee dispensers and they ask for a tip. WTF I can press the Botton my self.
America is funny
Servers should get paid regular salaries. Tips are for appreciation. Being forced to tip? Why don’t you just include it in the price?!
I’ve never worked at a restaurant that requires you to pay for a no tip.
She needs to work elsewhere lol
Ridiculous the greedy owner should be paying proper wages to the employees. And should be up to us whenever we feel like paying a tip
I had a $3 tip on $160 bill. I lost money serving them lol
I live in Iceland and tipping is almost nonexistent. The price you see on the tag, menu, etc. is the final price. Which is already high enough. Very transparent and convenient.
I can’t stand the whole tipping culture
It’s not comming out of her pockets, its comminh out of her tips. I’m sick of people pretending waitresses qre these huge victims. Cooks do most of the work for much much less.
Moral hazard
